Recommendations for a shop/mechanic selling good quality refurbished steel racing bicycles?

Dear all

I've become a dad and between work and childcare I only really have a couple of hours for myself in the weekend. The weather is good too and all I want in those hours is to hop on a bicycle and e.g. follow the Teltow canal with no destination in mind (well, fully knowing I might eventually end up in..Teltow).

I've always wanted a good bicycle but I find modern ones perhaps too 'technical'. I am not a good enough cyclist to benefit from those carbon fiber wonders and I don't have time to put the lycra on. Jeans trainers and a half light fast bicycle is all I want.

I've been fascinated by those steel racing bikes of yore eg http://www.eisenherz-bikes.de/ . A nimble, 3-speed old Bianchi or Peugeot or something.

I'm thinking of getting one of those but I'd love for it to be in fully restored condition to last me for years. I'd like to spend this money on a local shop or experienced local bike mechanic rather than mail order.

There is a one local to me https://bici-da-corsa.com/ However I can never find him open. I don't know if he's still in business. Or perhaps his working hours fully overlap with mine.

Can you recommend another one? The West would be better.

if you're west-side, check out fahrrad borsig in charlottenburg. they don't specialize in racing bikes but the older guy there has a soft spot for steel frames and will point you to whatever they've got in the back. also, kiezrad in wilmersdorf sometimes gets vintage road bikes in, nothing fancy but solidly rebuilt. for the bianchi or peugeot fix you might have to travel east a bit, but honestly most west shops are either overpriced or dead on this stuff. if you can spare a saturday morning, the flea market at mauerpark sometimes has a guy selling fully restored peugeots, he's there maybe once a month near the food stalls

try schraubwerkstatt in moabit, they do solid refurbs on old steel frames and actually know their stuff. not a flashy shop but the guy there has been at it for years. for a bianchi or peugeot you might also check stahlrad in neukolln, they usually have a couple restored ones in stock and can order parts if needed. both should be open saturdays if weekday hours are an issue

honestly just go see marco at radsport rath in spandau. he builds up old colnagos and de rosas from scratch, not a ton of stock but he'll find you something solid if you tell him what you want. his hours are weird too but he's usually around saturday mornings till like 1. fwiw i'd skip the peugeot hunt and look for a late 80s centurion or a koga-miyata, way better steel for the same money and parts are easier to find here.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
