Do I need to register for yoga and meditation-related freelancing?

Would you lik… I have a full-time job in Berlin. However, I plan to start providing yoga and meditation sessions online to some friends and their friends. I am certified by the Indian Yoga Association. Would you like me to register anywhere or let my workplace know before I start the meditation workshops? I did some research, and I am confused. Some websites say that you need to register, and some say you don't have to if you are doing it on a small scale. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

the finanzamt won't come knocking for a few friends paying you 20 euros per session. but if you want to sleep better, just get a steuernummer for freelancing (freiberufler) since yoga instruction counts as a teaching activity here, not a trade. you'd register at the finanzamt, not the burgeramt for a gewerbe. check your arbeitsvertrag for any nebentätigkeit clause, most standard contracts at bigger companies just say you need permission if it interferes with your main job, which yoga at 8pm on a tuesday won't

Since you're certified by the Indian Yoga Association, that's a solid credential but it doesn't change the tax side of things in Berlin. The Finanzamt generally cares about whether you're making a profit, not your certification. If you're just charging friends small amounts, you're probably fine keeping it off the books for now, but once you start invoicing anyone outside your circle or making over 410 euros a month, you'll need a Kleingewerbe registration at the Bürgeramt and a tax number. Your employer only needs to know if your contract has a clause about secondary employment, which most standard German contracts do, so check that before you start.

honestly you're overthinking it a bit. if you're just doing a few sessions for friends on the side, no need to register with the finanzamt or tell your employer. the key threshold is whether you're earning more than 410 euros a month from it or running it like a proper business with regular clients. once you start making real money or advertising publicly, then you'd need a small business registration (gewerbeanmeldung) and probably a tax number. for now just keep it chill and maybe track what you earn in case the finanzamt asks later. your employer only needs to know if your side thing conflicts with your contract or if it eats into your main job hours, which it wont if it's just evenings

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
