How bad is the student accommodation situation in Berlin around Sept-Oct?

Sublets are fine too, I just don't want to be homeless when when I get there haha

ngl the hauptbahnhof comment hits close to home but there's one hack ppl sleep on: the "zwischenmiete" listings on wg-gesucht that start in july-august but end right before october. landlords often need someone to cover rent while they're traveling, and those contracts are way less competitive cause the dates don't fit most students. message them anyway and ask if they can extend or know someone in their building.

also, if u got the budget, look at the "serviced apartments" outside the ring, like in adlershof or köpenick. they're not cheap, around 800-1000 warm for a studio, but they take bookings for 3-6 months without a schufa or visa drama. that buys u time to actually visit places in person, which matters cause half the scams are obvious once u see the flat. never wire money before u step inside, even if they send a "passport photo" and a sob story.

one more thing: the semesterticket covers the whole abc zone, so living in potsdam or bernau is not crazy if u find a cheap wg there. takes 40 mins to get to TU or HU but u'll have a room while everyone else is crying over a 12 sqm in wedding. check the potsdam uni facebook groups too, they post rooms that rarely hit the berlin sites.

honestly it's brutal rn. winter semester is peak chaos, sept-oct is when everyone floods in and the wg-gesucht listings get like 200 replies in a day. ur best bet is to start messaging 2 months out, not 1, and be ready to send a proper intro about urself, not just "hi is this available". sublets are way easier to land than permanent contracts, so use that to buy time, but even those go fast if they're near the ring.

one thing ppl overlook is the uni's own housing service or the studierendenwerk waitlist, but u gotta apply the second u have ur enrollment letter, even if u think it's hopeless. also check ebay kleinanzeigen and the facebook groups for ur specific uni, sometimes landlords post there instead of the big sites cause they're tired of the spam. if ur really stuck, look at temporary hostels or airbnb for the first 2 weeks and treat finding a place like a part time job, check listings every few hours and reply within 10 mins of them going up.

and tbh, be flexible on neighborhoods. everyone wants kreuzberg or neukölln, but places like lichtenberg, marzahn, or even spandau have rooms that sit longer and the sbahn gets u anywhere quick anyway. it's not the dream postcard berlin but it beats sleeping in the hauptbahnhof

Another thing that works: join the WhatsApp and Telegram groups for your specific program or faculty. There are usually a few floating around, ask on the uni subreddit or the Facebook group for your course. People post rooms there before they even hit WG-Gesucht because they'd rather pass it to someone they sort of know than deal with 200 strangers. I've seen flats get filled within an hour of a post going up in those groups, so it pays to check your phone obsessively for a couple weeks.

Also, don't sleep on the "Genossenschaft" listings, though those are more for permanent flats than sublets. But if you're willing to sign a longer lease, some cooperatives have waiting lists that move faster than you'd think, especially for smaller units outside the trendy districts. You'll need to be in Berlin to attend their info sessions in person though, so that's more of a plan B once you're already here.

One practical tip if you end up doing the hostel or Airbnb route first: book somewhere with a proper desk and decent wifi, not just a party hostel. You'll be sending applications and doing video calls with potential flatmates, and doing that from a cramped dorm room with a snoring bunkmate is miserable. Spend the extra few euros a night, it pays off when you can actually focus.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
