The most wonderful time of the year is right upon us and I'm already eyeing up my first trip to Diedersdorf Spargelgut this weekend when it reopens.

The trouble is I have friends visiting this week who are leaving on Friday but would love to try some fresh asparagus before they go. Does anyone know anywhere great that already has it's Spargelkarte in action I could take them? My friends are vegan so bonus points for vegan Spargelcremesuppe or hollandaise!

Also happy to just discuss/argue about where exactly in the city has the best soup or serves the freshest spears. I'm very excited!

yeah everyone's covered the markt angle pretty well, so let me throw a curveball: check out the spargel buffet at Restauration 1900 in friedrichshain. it's not vegan by default, but they do a killer cold spargel salad with a mustard vinaigrette that skips dairy entirely, and their vegan hollandaise is actually a lemon-oat thing that's surprisingly close to the real deal. they source from a small grower in teltow, not the big beelitz names, so the spears tend to be a bit nuttier and less watery this early.

for soup, i'd actually argue for going south a bit, to Gasthaus Alt-Buckow in neukölln. they're a proper old-school brauhaus vibe but their kitchen does a vegan spargelcremesuppe with a potato base that's way richer than the usual cashew stuff, and they've had it on since last weekend. pair that with a walk around the körnerpark after, it's a better afternoon than most touristy spots.

also, if ur friends are leaving friday, grab a jar of the pickled spargel from the edeka at boxhagener platz, the brand is "Beelitzer Feinkost" and it's shockingly good for supermarket stuff. not the same as fresh but a fun souvenir for the flight back.

honestly for vegan spargel, your best bet this early is the thai park crowd at prenzlauer berg, weirdly enough. some of the vendors there do a grilled spargel with a coconut lime dressing that's totally plant based and way more interesting than another cream soup. but if u want the classic experience, try li.ke raw in schöneberg, they had a white spargel with almond hollandaise on their insta story last week, might still be on the menu.

the real move tho is hitting the wochenmarkt at winterfeldtplatz on wednesday morning. there's a beelitz grower there who sells seconds for like 4 euros a kilo, perfect for roasting. get the thin ones, toss with olive oil and flaky salt, 10 min in the oven. your vegan friends will love it more than any restaurant version, plus u save money for the good stuff at diedersdorf later.

For soup specifically, I'd point you toward Kopps in Prenzlauer Berg, they run fully plant-based and their Spargelcremesuppe usually lands right when the local season kicks off. But if you want something a bit more unexpected, check out the spargel station at Markthalle Neun's Thursday market, some of the Brandenburg growers there will have thin early spears already, and you can grab a bundle to roast at home with just oil and salt. That beats most restaurant versions this early anyway, the first harvest is so delicate that heavy sauces just cover it up.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
