Why is air quality index so poor these days?

I noticed in the past days the air quality index has worsened in the city. I usually see this in the Weather app on my iPhone

Why is that? Higher temperatures? Pollen?

The Weather app pulls data from a single monitoring station often located near a major road, so it's not great for Berlin's actual air quality. Your Kiez might be fine while the app shows red because the station on Frankfurter Allee is picking up truck exhaust. Check the Luftdaten.info map with the purple sensors, those are citizen-run and give you a much better picture of your immediate area.

honestly the iphone weather app is just bad for berlin, it pulls from a generic model not the actual sensors around the city. check the luftdaten.info map instead, it's citizen-run and shows readings from people's balconies all over. you'll see spots like kreuzberg near the ring show way higher numbers than somewhere like grunewald. the temperature shift from 30c to 20c at night also messes with the ground-level ozone, that's a different pollutant than the dust and pollen

tbh the iphone weather app pulls from a pretty broad area so it's not always accurate for your exact street. i live near tempelhofer feld and my reading is way different than friends in x-berg, probably because the open field lets the air circulate better. if you check feinstaub.online you can see sensor readings from actual people's balconies, way more useful than the generic city number

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
