TW; Assault (possibly sexual)

A friend of mine here in Berlin is currently seeing an aggressive and abusive partner. She has been a choked and attacked by him several times, he comes to her street and demends to see her without accepting no, and is generally dangerous.

She has also said he has been to prison, has told her "he has nothing to lose", and is afraid to report him because she believes he will become (even more) violent.

We (several different friends) think he is seeing her against her will, and think we need to contact the police before something even worse happens. She doesn't want to contact the police because specifically 1 - She doesn't think they can protect her, and 2 - He is constantly saying he will do better and if she gives him another chance it will be fine.

We don't know her address, only area, but we have her full name (which is an uncommon one so hopefully easy to find). We sadly only have the guys first name. She also disappears constantly and doesn't respond to messages for a long time, making us constantly worried that he has already done something.

We spoke to a hotline regarding the subject and they also urged us to call the police, but we're not sure if they will do anything. We haven't personally seen the assaults, have no concrete proof ourselves (she had markings on her neck this Monday), and don't know exactly who the guy is.

And advice would be welcome.

yeah the choking thing is really serious, like the other person said. you could also try the "Weisser Ring" victim support hotline at 116 006, they can give you advice on how to report anonymously or what legal steps are possible without her direct involvement. theyre pretty good at navigating the system here

Call 110 and tell them exactly what you wrote here. The police in Berlin have a domestic violence unit that handles cases like this, and they can do a welfare check even without a full address if you give them the area and her name. They also have victim protection officers who can reach out to her directly and explain options like emergency accommodation or a restraining order, which she might not know about.

You should also contact the Berliner Hilfetelefon "Gewalt gegen Frauen" at 030 611 03 00. They can advise you on what to say to the police and how to support her without putting her at more risk. The choking is a huge red flag, statistically that's the strongest predictor of escalation to homicide in domestic violence cases, so don't wait for her to be ready to report.

The Berlin police have a "Kriminalpolizeilicher Opferschutz" unit that specifically deals with high-risk domestic violence cases, and they can absolutely start an investigation based on what you've described even without her cooperation. If you call 110 and mention the choking and the prison threat, they'll flag it as a priority and can pull up her name in the system to find her registered address, then do a surprise wellness check where they can see evidence like marks on her neck and talk to her alone.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
