I just came back after 4 months out, and the first thing I realized is that there has been a huge surge in prices in my usual go-to places.

Suddenly, 3 pieces of pizza is 15€. Coffee and cake/croissant/bagel, minimum 10€. I didn't notice such a crazy change on groceries, but the increase in price was crazy already before I left in November...

I know it has not been from one day to the next, and that MwSt. changed, but don't you think that the situation is getting out of control?

If I have to be honest, it really looks like a "short-term gain, long term pain" type of situation.

My personal take on it: I reduced the amount of times I consume, significantly, plus I started taking a tapperware to work and taking food home to have for dinner.

What is your opinion? And what are your strategies to cope?

It's not just you. I've been tracking it and some places have raised prices twice since last summer. The trick I've found is to look for the old-school Konditoreien in Wedding or Neukölln that haven't rebranded for the Instagram crowd. They still charge around 3.50 for a slice of cake and a filter coffee, and the cake is usually better. For lunch, I've been hitting the Asian places on Kantstraße where you can still get a solid bowl of pho for under 9 euro if you skip the drinks.

You are absolutely right. What I have noticed is that the gap between a quick lunch at a bakery and a sit-down meal at a proper restaurant has basically disappeared. You can get a decent döner for 7 or 8 euro, but a single slice of cake and a filter coffee at a place like Zeit fuer Brot will run you close to 9 euro now.

My strategy has been to lean harder into the things that are still a good deal. I go to the Asian grocery stores near Hermannplatz for big bags of rice and noodles, and I started making my own cold brew in a big pitcher. It tastes better than most of the 4.50 euro iced lattes around town, and one batch lasts me the whole week.

yeah it's wild. i just buy a thermos and make coffee at home now, saves like 50€ a month easy

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
