Christmas gift for our building superintendent

We've lived in Paris for a while and have a wonderful building superintendent. We're unsure how much to give her for Christmas. Any customary guidelines?

It depends heavily on your relationship with her and what she does beyond the standard duties. A small, thoughtful gift – a nice bottle of wine, a high-quality box of chocolates from a Parisian chocolatier, or a gift basket with local delicacies – would be perfectly acceptable if your relationship is purely professional. If she goes above and beyond regularly (helping with packages, small repairs, etc.), something a bit more generous, perhaps in the 50-100 euro range, wouldn't be out of line. Ultimately, err on the side of slightly more generous than you think is necessary rather than too little; a generous gift shows appreciation.

That's a really good point about the relationship aspect. I hadn't thought about it that way. A gift basket with local stuff is a nice touch – feels more personal than a generic gift card. Fifty to a hundred euros does seem like a sweet spot for someone who goes the extra mile, though. I'd hate to come across as cheap, so leaning towards the more generous side makes sense.

Quiet Fireworks Viewing?

Hello, I'm taking my grandmother and her sister to see the fireworks at the Arc de Triomphe tonight. Given their age, I'd rather avoid the crush of people on the Champs-Élysées. Any recommendations f… more

Honestly, the Champs-Élysées is a total zoo for fireworks. Try the Parc de la Villette. It's a bit further out, but you'll get a decent view and it's way less crowded. Grab a spot early, though, even there it gets busy. Pack a picnic; avoids those crazy firework-night prices.
