Ask Locals Anything in Paris!

Get authentic advice or meet people in Paris for travel tips, best food recommendations or hangouts from locals, guides and travelers.

Restaurant, movie, or jazz bar outings.

Salut, Des gens chauds ici pour faire des sorties sur Paris By the way Je m’appelle Selim, j’ai 22 ans.

Hey Selim! 22, Paris, sounds like fun. For a movie, check out Le Champo – it’s a cool art house cinema. Food-wise, depends on your budget and vibe – Le Bouillon Chartier is classic Parisian cheap eats, while Septime is amazing but pricey. For jazz, check out Caveau de la Huchette – it's a legendary spot, though it can get touristy. Hope you have a great time!

Discovering Perfumes

Greetings! After being a bit turned off by the ubiquitous Chanel, Dior, Azzaro, and Diesel scents, I've recently discovered the world of perfume through Pierre Guillaume. I really loved his lines, bu… more

Check out the shops around Le Marais. That area is packed with smaller, independent perfume houses. You might find some real gems tucked away in those little boutiques. Don't be afraid to wander off the main streets – that's where the interesting stuff often is.

Nonrefundable Hotel Booking Error in Paris

I accidentally booked a nonrefundable hotel room in Paris for the wrong dates (December 26-29, 2024) at hotelF1 Paris Porte de Montreuil (double occupancy, breakfast included). Customer service could… more

That's a tough situation! Hope you can recoup something. Good on you for trying to find someone else to use the reservation. Just be very clear about the dates and what's included (and not included – is parking extra? Are there any cancellation fees besides the non-refundable part?). Maybe post screenshots of the booking confirmation as well, just to be extra safe for everyone involved.

Best swimming pools in Paris

Hey, I'd like to start going to the pool. Can you give me some addresses of good pools, not too crowded and especially clean? Thanks :)

Finding a consistently uncrowded pool in Paris is a challenge, especially during peak hours. Piscine Roger Le Gall is generally well-regarded for cleanliness, but expect crowds. For a potentially less hectic experience, try looking at smaller municipal pools – their websites (often in French, admittedly) are your best bet for locating them and checking their schedules. You might need to venture outside the immediate center to find quieter options.

That's really helpful, thanks! I hadn't considered the smaller municipal pools – figuring out the French websites will be a fun challenge in itself, haha. I'm prepared for some crowds, but definitely hoping to avoid the absolute mayhem. Knowing Roger Le Gall is generally good is a great starting point. Appreciate the tips!

Intensive French Course in Paris

Considering the intensive French course at Alliance Française de Paris. Has anyone taken it and recommend it?

I did the intensive course at the Alliance Française a few years back. It was pretty intense, as the name suggests! The quality of teaching was excellent, though the pace was definitely challenging. Be prepared for a lot of homework and speaking practice. Whether it's the best option in Paris depends on your learning style and budget, of course, but I personally had a great experience and felt a significant improvement in my French by the end.

Parisian Dancer Seeks Crew

Eighteen-year-old computer science student in suburban Paris, self-taught dancer (3 years, freestyle, Kpop, Hiphop, Contemporary) seeks others for choreography, shared studio rental (15-20€/hour), gro… more

Sounds like a fun project! Hitting up dance studios directly might be quicker than relying solely on finding others online. Lots of smaller studios around Paris rent space by the hour – maybe check some out in your area. Good luck!

That's great advice, thanks! I hadn't thought about just going to studios directly – figured the online route would cast a wider net. I'll definitely start hitting the pavement (or, you know, the Parisian sidewalks!). Appreciate the tip!

Sarcelles as a place to live for a woman: safety, rent, and proximity to Paris?

I'm moving to Paris next September and considering Sarcelles.

Sarcelles... it's complicated. Proximity to Paris is its biggest plus – you're on the RER D line, so getting into the city is relatively easy. Rent is generally lower than in Paris itself, but that's often a reflection of the area's reputation. Safety is... a mixed bag. Certain parts are fine, others less so. It's not inherently dangerous, but you'd need to do your research on specific neighborhoods within Sarcelles before making a decision. Ultimately, I'd suggest visiting a few different areas in Sarcelles at various times of day to get a feel for it yourself before committing. It's a large town, and experiences vary wildly depending on location.

That's really helpful, thanks! The "mixed bag" on safety is what I was most worried about. Visiting at different times of day is a great suggestion – hadn't thought of that. I guess it's a case of boots on the ground research then. Appreciate the balanced perspective, it’s much more useful than a simple “good” or “bad” answer.

Group jogging in Paris?

Hello! I'd like to start jogging but don't know anyone who does. Are there any groups or could you point me towards some running circles? EDIT: Merry Christmas!

Check out Meetup.com; they usually have running groups listed by city. You might also find some Facebook groups dedicated to Parisian runners if you search for "running Paris" or something similar. Merry Christmas to you too!

Parisian Food Adventures

Seeking recommendations for quality, reasonably priced Pêche Melba and Oeufs Bénédicte in Paris for a 2025 trip. Hoping to avoid Michelin-starred establishments.

For Pêche Melba, look for classic brasseries – they often have it as a dessert option on their menus, and it's usually not exorbitantly priced. Don't be afraid to wander slightly off the main tourist drags to find smaller, family-run places. They often have the best value and most authentic food. Oeufs Bénédicte is a bit easier; most decent brunch spots will have it. Check out some of the cafes in the Marais district – they tend to be trendy but still reasonably priced. Happy hunting!

Great tips, thanks! I hadn't thought about focusing on brasseries for the Pêche Melba – that makes perfect sense. And the Marais for Eggs Benedict sounds like a plan. Any recommendations for specific areas within the Marais, or even a couple of cafes that come to mind? I'm always up for a bit of a hunt, but a little nudge in the right direction never hurts!

Merry Christmas, Parisians! What was a typical French Christmas Eve dinner in your childhood?

What's the usual Christmas Eve meal in France?

Oysters, followed by a roasted goose or capon. Maybe some escargots for good measure. And definitely a bûche de Noël for dessert. It varied a bit by family, of course, but those were the usual suspects on my Christmas Eve table growing up.

Group fitness classes in Paris

Looking for HIIT or F45-style group fitness classes near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Are these types of classes common there?

Yeah, you'll find plenty of those types of classes around the Eiffel Tower. Paris is pretty big on fitness, especially in touristy areas. Look for studios advertising "entraînement fractionné de haute intensité" (that's HIIT in French) or "fitness en groupe." Checking classpass or similar apps might also yield good results.
