the lantern festival tip is solid but if u can't make it in winter, the mid autumn one at the same square is just as good, smaller crowd tho. also the shadow puppet show, sit on the left side, the puppeteers r more visible from there and u can peek at the stage wings when they switch scenes. oh and skip the tram, honestly walking the old town is faster, the tram stops are kinda far from the good alleys anyway. laozhang noodle house is legit, but they close by 2pm, so go for lunch not dinner.

both replies nailed the big stuff but nobody mentioned the morning calligraphy practice at the academy, every day at 7am the old masters set up tables in the front courtyard and let visitors try their hand with brush and ink for free, just show up and they'll hand u a brush, no need to book anything. it's a way cooler way to connect with the place than the guided tour honestly. also for the tram, if u do take it, sit on the right side going east, u get the best view of the river bends and the old rooftops, but yeah walking is still better. and the fried sesame balls at the east gate night market, the stall is right next to the shadow puppet theater entrance, not the one with the red banner, that's the tourist trap, the one with the blue cart, u'll see the line. get there by 7:15pm, they sell out fast.

all the recs so far are good but nobody mentioned the hanting express near renmin square is actually two buildings, the newer one on the side street is way quieter and has better soundproofing, same price. i learned that the hard way after a sleepless night facing the main road.
for the digital nomad thing, the loft hotel is great but check out the co-working space on the third floor of the old silk factory, they do a day pass for 30 cny and the wifi is faster than the hostel's. also the coffee shop next to it, the one with the blue sign, does a 15 cny americano refill deal if you bring your own cup.
one thing the guide skipped, the lotus lake area has a night market on fridays that's mostly locals, tiny stalls selling grilled skewers and those sweet potato balls, everything under 10 cny. it's a 10 minute walk from the green garden homestay and way less touristy than the riverwalk one. just bring cash, some of the older vendors don't take mobile payments.
fwiw the museum tip is underrated, the Zijinglu Museum does free guided tours at 10am on weekdays that nobody seems to know about, the English one is small but the guide is this retired professor who tells way better stories than the audio guide. also the old town is walkable but the cobblestones murder your ankles, wear proper shoes not sandals.
for getting around, the metro is fine but the Line 2 trains get stupid crowded between 8-9am, like sardines level. if you're heading to the museum or old town in the morning, just take the 12 bus instead, it's slower but you get a seat and it passes right by the west gate.
oh and the guide mentioned the night market near Renmin Square, but the real move is the one that pops up on Thursday nights along the riverwalk, half the price and the grilled squid stall there is the best in the city. locals keep it low key, you won't find it on any map.

Just check the ferry schedule, it stops running at 6pm which caught us off guard once.
Also worth knowing, the bus network is cheaper than the metro if you're going short distances, 1 CNY flat fare and most routes run till midnight, way later than the trains. The 27 bus goes straight from the East Bus Station to the nightlife district in about 20 minutes, which solves the late night transport problem without paying for a taxi.
