On your last day, visit the Xinzhou Antique Market at 34 Jiefang Road, open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Bargain for jade trinkets and calligraphy scrolls. Then grab a final bowl of noodles before heading to the train station.
Pretty good itinerary for a first timer. I'd add that the museum on Qiyi Road has a second floor gallery that most people miss, it's got a small collection of bronze mirrors from the Tang dynasty and there's never anyone up there. The lighting is terrible but the mirrors themselves are stunning.
For the night market, the steamed bun stall with the red sign near the middle has a pork and pickled cabbage filling that's way better than the regular ones. The lady makes them fresh every 15 minutes so you might wait but it's worth it. I've seen her sell out by 8pm on weekends.
On the wall walk, go counterclockwise from the south gate entrance. The morning light hits the old rooftops better from that direction and you'll end up near the noodle house for lunch.
honestly the guide is pretty thorough for a short trip. one thing i'd add is that the wutai mountain bus route 801 has a morning express departure at 6:30am that skips some local stops and gets you there in 40 minutes instead of an hour. it's the same 5 yuan fare but the driver usually only takes cash too, so bring small bills
for the night market on nanmen street the skewer stall third from the south entrance has the best lamb, the old couple running it have been there since the 90s. their cumin mix is different from the others, spicier but not overwhelming. i always grab 10 yuan worth and eat it walking
also if you're into photography the yunzhonghe park pagoda has a great view of the city at sunset but the gate locks at 5:30pm not 6pm. i got stuck inside once and had to climb over a low wall near the east side, not ideal
the guide's solid but i'd swap the antique market for a morning at the bell tower on north street. it's free and you can ring the bell for luck, locals do it before exams. the view over the old rooftops is better than the wall imo
also laocheng noodle house is good but if queues are long try the lamb soup place two doors down. same price range, they use a family recipe from the 80s. the owner will tell u about it if he's not too busy
for wutai mountain bring cash, the bus ticket machine was broken when i went and the driver only took coins. nothing worse than scrambling for change while everyone waits

seconding the foguang temple shout, the wooden structure is incredible but honestly the real magic is how quiet it is compared to other unesco sites. one thing the guide doesn't mention is the train station area has a bunch of cheap guesthouses if you're on a budget, like 80-100 a night for a basic room. also if you're into photography, the yanmen pass sunrise is worth the early wakeup, the light hitting the old walls is something else
the guide nailed it on foguang temple but i'd add that the tang dynasty sculptures inside are genuinely world-class, way more impressive than the photos suggest. also if you're at yanmen pass, skip the main tourist path and take the left fork up to the old beacon tower, it's a bit of a scramble but you get the whole valley to yourself and the view is killer. for noodles, lao ma tou is solid but there's a tiny place called zhang ji on wenhua street that does a spicy lamb version for 18 kuai, their broth is richer imo. the antique market is fun but go early, like 7am, before the tour buses show up and prices get jacked
Foguang Temple is worth the drive but don't skip the smaller Nanchan Temple nearby if you have time. It has an even older Tang hall and costs only 20 RMB, way fewer tourists. For a solid meal after the museum, walk two blocks east to the dumpling house on Changzheng East Street, the lamb and chive ones are 12 kuai for a dozen and they make the wrappers by hand right in the window. The antique market tip about going early is spot on, I picked up a Qing dynasty coin for 15 yuan at 7:30 before the crowds hit.
