the museum is actually way better than it sounds, i spent almost 2 hours in there without noticing. the ceramics upstairs are the real deal, some pieces are over 3000 years old. also if ur at the night market, skip the rice wine and get the fried tofu from the old lady at the far end, it's like 5 rmb and honestly the best thing i ate in xin'an. one thing the guide missed, the riverfront bike path gets packed with joggers around 6pm, so if u want a smooth ride go a bit earlier or later.
Solid list, the noodle place is legit but I'd add that they do a breakfast version with a lighter broth that's even better, opens at 6:30 and you'll have the place mostly to yourself. Also worth grabbing the city wall ticket as part of the combined pass with the museum, it's only 40 RMB total and saves you the hassle of queuing twice. One thing nobody mentions, the teahouses along the riverfront, the second one past the East Gate Bridge, has this plum tea that tastes like nothing else in town, 8 RMB a cup and the owner will talk your ear off about the gorge's history if you let him.
good writeup, but the gorge is worth pushing past the main boat tour. if u walk about 15 min upstream from the drop-off point theres a small trail on the left, takes u to a swimming hole locals use. water is freezing but crystal clear, perfect after the hike. also the wall walk is nicer in the late afternoon, the light hits the old roofs real warm around 4pm, plus u avoid the tour groups that pile in right after opening. for the night market, if u see the stall with the huge wok and smoke, thats the chestnut guy, get a bag for 10 rmb, he roasts them over actual charcoal and theyre still warm when u walk back across the bridge.
Shanghai hidden gems beyond the Bund?
honestly skip the bund crowds and head to the former french concession around wukang road. grab a coffee at some random lane spot, the whole area has these old lane houses that feel way more real than the skyline. also check out the rock bund art museum near the south bund, it's in this old industrial building with killer views and barely any tourists last time i was there. if u want food, go to tianzifang but skip the main alleys and wander into the side lanes, you'll find a tiny dumpling place that's like 15 yuan for 10 pieces
if you're around on a weekend morning, hit up the antique market on dongtai road before it fully gentrifies. it's mostly gone now tbh but there's still a few stalls tucked near the intersection with liuhe road, you'll find old propaganda posters and weird mao-era knickknacks for like 20 kuai. also the shanghai natural history museum in jing'an is underrated, the building itself is this wild spiral shape and the dinosaur skeletons are legit impressive, plus it's like 30 yuan entry. for a quiet evening walk i'd do the suzhou creek path near the north bund but go west from the waibaidu bridge, past the old post office building, there's a stretch where the lights hit the water just right and nobody's around
yeah if you want something totally different check out the long museum (long museum west bund) it's this massive space with rotating contemporary art, way less crowded than the power station of art. also walk the suzhou creek trail near the north bund, it's kinda rough around the edges but you get these weird views of old factories mixed with new towers
