the museum is actually worth more than an hour if you're into bronze age stuff. they have this one mirror that's supposed to show the entire room behind you if you hold it at the right angle, took me like 15 minutes just staring at it. also the tea plantation tours are better in the late afternoon around 4pm, that's when they're actually processing the day's harvest and you can see the whole roasting process. the morning tours are just walking through the fields which is nice but not as interesting
Good to see a proper guide for Tongshan, the museum really does deserve more attention than it gets. I'd add that if you take the Jiugong Mountain hike, stop at the small temple about two-thirds of the way up, the monk there sometimes offers free tea to hikers and the view from that spot is better than the summit on hazy days. For the night market, the grilled tofu is solid but the stall two rows behind it sells sticky rice rolls stuffed with pickled mustard greens for 4 RMB, which I think is a better breakfast option than the noodles.
Nice guide, covers the essentials well. One thing I'd add is that the Fushui water town boat rentals are negotiable if you go as a group. I went with three friends and we talked the guy down to 35 RMB per hour for the four of us, just by asking politely in Mandarin. Also, the night market on Jiefang Road has a stall near the south entrance that sells fried taro balls for 5 RMB a bag, which I actually prefer over the grilled tofu. They're crispy on the outside and soft inside, and the lady there has been making them for over twenty years.

honestly this is a really well thought out itinerary, covers all the bases without being too packed. one thing i'd add is that the tongshan museum on day 1 is smaller than it looks from outside, you can prob get through it in an hour if you're not a huge history buff. the real gem there is the second floor exhibit on local calligraphy, they rotate it every few months and the current one has some nice scrolls from a local artist who's still alive, which is rare
for the pedestrian street on day 3, if you're into photography the best shot is from the footbridge at the south end right around 4pm when the light comes through the buildings. also the dumpling stall they mention is good but the one two doors down with the blue awning does a better pork and chive filling imo, same price at like 8 yuan for 10
one more thing about the east lake, if you go there's a small dock on the far side where you can rent fishing rods for like 10 yuan, no license needed. i spent a chill hour there last fall just watching the locals, caught nothing but it was nice
Good to see someone putting together a proper plan for Tongshan. I've lived here for a few years and a couple things stand out from the guide.
The Ancient City Wall on day 1 is worth doing, but most people miss the small gate on the south side that leads to a quiet garden with old stone tablets. It's not marked well, just look for the faded red door about halfway along the wall section near Renmin Road. Takes maybe 15 extra minutes but the garden has some really old carvings from the Qing dynasty that the museum doesn't show.
For day 3, the East Lake Scenic Area is a solid choice but you'd want at least two hours there to do it properly, the walking path around the lake is about 3 kilometers. If your train is early evening you'll be fine, but if it's before 5pm I'd skip the lake and spend more time at the Art District instead. There's a ceramic workshop in the back building where you can watch the potters work, they sell direct for about half what the galleries charge.
this is a solid itinerary, especially day 2. phoenix mountain is nice but if you're there on a weekend it gets crowded fast, i'd recommend going right when it opens at 7am to have the trails mostly to yourself. the little temple at the top has a great view of the whole city, worth the steep walk
one thing the guide doesn't mention is that the night market on zhongshan street has a few stalls that do a local specialty called tongshan baked pancakes, they're chewy and stuffed with savory fillings, look for the old lady with the red cart near the west end. also for the pedestrian street on day 3, there's a tiny tea shop tucked into a side alley called qingxin tang, they do a really good osmanthus oolong for like 12 yuan, much better than the chain bubble tea places
