theres a decent hike up to the old watchtower ruins on the hill west of town, about 30 min drive on the dirt road past the grain silos. the view over the plain at sunset is solid and youll have the place to yourself most days. bring bug spray though, the mosquitoes there are aggressive
honestly the drive out to Wudalianchi volcano scenic area is prob your best bet if you havent been, its like an hour east on the G111 and the lava terrain is pretty unique for this part of china. the lakes there are a nice spot for a picnic but skip the cable car up the main volcano, its kinda overpriced for what you get
if you want something more lowkey, head south to the Nen River bend near the old ferry crossing, about 40 min by car. local fishermen hang out there and theres a tiny noodle shack run by an old couple who make decent heihe-style noodles for like 8 yuan a bowl
if you're up for a bit of a drive, head northwest toward the old russian settlement near shihe village, maybe an hour and a half out. there's a half-collapsed orthodox church from the 1900s that nobody really looks after, kinda eerie but cool if you're into abandoned stuff. the road gets rough after the last paved stretch so take a car with some clearance
