the ferry across the lake is actually the most chill way to get from the east side to the west market, only 3 yuan and runs until sunset. just don't expect it to be on time, they leave when they feel like it. ride shares are fine but good luck getting one during the lunch rush around renmin road, the traffic jams are brutal.
honestly the buses are fine for getting between main neighborhoods like Donghu and the old town but they stop running pretty early, like 9pm on some routes. i'd grab a bike rental instead if you're staying central, there's a solid network of docks and it's flat enough to not hate your life. ride shares can be hit or miss outside peak hours, especially if you're trying to go to the temple complex at the edge of town.
ngl the bus system is decent enough during the day but the real hack is the little electric scooters you can rent through the app. they're all over the place near the riverwalk and cost like 2 yuan for 15 minutes. just watch out for the cobblestone streets in the old town, those things rattle your teeth out

the museum's actually worth a quick stop if you're into old maps, they got this huge one of mizhou from the qing dynasty that shows the canal way wider than it is now. but yeah, lao zhang's at 11:30 is the move, i went at 12:45 once and waited 20 minutes.
for the canal tour, skip the 50 yuan one and just walk the east bank instead. there's a bridge about 200 meters past the south wharf where the boat turns around, and you get the same view for free. the teahouses there charge 15 yuan for a pot of jasmine tea, way cheaper than the ones near the north gate.
the pottery village is cool but the real deal is the sunday morning farmers market two streets over, only runs till 10 am. you'll find unglazed pots for like 30 yuan that the workshops would sell for triple. just don't expect any english signs there, point and smile works fine.
honestly the night market tip about fried milk sticks is legit, but dont sleep on the candied hawthorn stalls two rows back from the main drag. they're these little red berries on a stick, coated in hard sugar, and theyre like 5 yuan. i grabbed one last time and it beat any dessert i had in the city.

solid itinerary honestly, day 1 is spot on. one thing tho, skip the museum if you're short on time, the confucius temple courtyard is way more worth it. also, lao zhang's is great but go at 11:30, by noon the line spills out onto zhongshan rd.

if you have a spare hour on day 2, walk past the pottery village to the old kiln ruins behind it. no sign, just a dirt path, but the exposed brickwork is from the ming dynasty and nobody's there. way cooler than the workshops imo.
