I've always thought the area around East Gate is pretty underrated. There's a nice little wet market tucked behind the temple that does great dried seafood and handmade tofu, plus the metro's just a five-minute walk from there. It's a bit quieter than South Market, but you've still got everything you need.

You'll want to be near the South Market district, around Minzhu Road. That area has the best food stalls and a covered morning market where vendors sell fresh noodles and pickled vegetables until about 11am. The metro's Line 2 runs right under that street, so you can get to the train station in under ten minutes. I'd avoid the north side near the industrial zone, it's cheaper but the metro stops are farther apart and the food options are mostly chain places.

honestly, i'd pick the area around Guangming Square if you want a good mix. there's a small food market tucked into the alley behind the department store that's open late, and the metro's right there on line 3. it's a bit more lively at night than east gate but not as hectic as south market, and you can walk to the old town in about 15 minutes. just avoid the hotel right on the square itself, the noise from the buskers carries pretty far into the night
