fwiw the Daweishan hike is great but if you're not up for the full 3 hours, there's a shorter loop near the entrance that takes about an hour and still has some nice waterfall views. also for the Ziquejie day trip, spring is good but early autumn is actually my favorite, the rice is golden and the light hits different, plus way fewer tourists than spring. just be aware the road there is pretty winding, if you get carsick take something beforehand

For the Meishan Dragon Palace, I'd suggest going early right when it opens at 8, the tour groups start rolling in around 10 and the narrow cave passages get packed. Also a heads up, the 120 CNY ticket only covers the cave itself, the glass bridge they added last year is another 50 on top if you want to try it.
For the evening riverside walk, there's a small tea stall near the second bridge that sells fresh sugarcane juice for 5 CNY a cup, way better than the bottled stuff at the convenience stores. The owner's been there for years and will let you watch them press it right there.

honestly the guide is right about the Changqing Street noodles being good but the real move is grabbing a bowl of the spicy beef noodles from the stall just past the pharmacy, it's like 2 RMB more but the broth has way more depth. also if you're at Sunwater Park in the morning you might catch the old guys doing tai chi near the pavilion around 8 AM, it's a nice vibe to watch for a bit before the crowds show up
for the Ziquejie Terraces i'd add that the bus from Shuangfeng to the terraces is more like 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, not 20, so plan accordingly. and yeah the last bus back from Xinhua is 4:30 PM, i learned that the hard way too, but if you miss it there's a shared van service that runs until 6 PM from the main square for about 25 RMB a person, just ask around for the "mianbao che" drivers
one thing nobody mentioned is that the Loudi Museum has a tiny tea room in the back courtyard that serves free samples of local green tea, it's easy to walk past but worth stopping for a few minutes, especially if the weather's hot
ngl the night market tip is spot on but i'd add that the grilled tofu at the third stall from the east end has a better spice blend than most, it's run by an older couple who've been there for years. also if you're doing the museum in under an hour like the other person said, swing by the small calligraphy room on the second floor, it's easy to miss but has some nice local pieces
for the ziquejie terraces, the 80 rmb entry is fine but bring cash, card readers can be hit or miss up there. i went in autumn and the golden rice was gorgeous but the path near the top gets muddy after rain, so wear shoes with grip. the farmhouse lunch is a good call but the smoked pork is usually sold out by 1 PM so get there early if you want it
The Ziquejie Terraces entry fee went up to 80 RMB last year, but it's still worth it. If you're going in spring, the rice paddies are flooded and reflect the sky, which is when locals prefer to photograph them. The farmhouse lunch near Shuangfeng is a good call, but ask for the smoked pork, it's their specialty and much better than the generic stir-fry options on the menu.
One thing to watch for on the Shuiche day trip is that the last bus back from Xinhua to Loudi leaves at 4:30 PM, not 5:30 as the guide suggests. I nearly got stuck there last fall and had to split a taxi with a couple of students. The ancient town itself is charming but quiet, so don't expect much nightlife if you do miss the bus.
