Chasing light in Korla: where do you shoot?
The old cotton mills on the eastern edge of town are worth a look if you want something less obvious. The sunlight comes through the broken windows around 6pm and hits the rusted machinery in a way that feels almost abandoned but beautiful. For night photography, the footbridge over the railway tracks near the bus station gives you a long exposure shot of the train lights streaking through, and it's usually quiet enough that no one bothers you while you set up.
You will want to head to the Peacock River scenic area right as the sun gets low. The water and the willows catch that warm light really well, and the reflections off the modern buildings on the south bank give you a nice contrast. For night shots, the area around the People's Square and the old city gate is solid, but I actually prefer climbing the small hill at the Tiemen Pass ruins. The city lights spread out below you and the silhouette of the mountains in the background makes for a cleaner composition than the busy streets downtown.
if you're into minimal desert landscapes, drive about 20 minutes east on the ku'erle highway until the dunes start. the sand catches that last bit of golden light like nothing else, and it's dead quiet. for night shots, the small mosque off bayinguoleng road has a really cool minaret that lights up blue after maghrib prayer, just be respectful and don't set up too close to the entrance
