It's a sobering site, the former biological warfare research base from WWII, and it's free to enter. It's not a fun day out but it's one of the most important historical sites in the region, and most visitors skip it because it's not marketed like the tiger park.

For the Ice and Snow World, a small tip: go on a weekday if you can, and aim for late afternoon around 3 PM. You get the last bit of daylight for photos, then the lights come on around 4:30 and the crowds haven't peaked yet. Weekends are a mess with tour groups.

The Songhua River islands are nice in summer but Sun Island specifically has a huge Russian-style complex from the 1930s called the Volga Manor, which most people miss. It's a 20 minute bus ride past the main island, costs about 60 yuan entry, and has these restored wooden churches and a little lake. Quieter than the main park.

honestly this is a solid list but i'd add the Harbin Grand Theatre as a day trip option if you're into architecture. it's on the north bank of the Songhua River, a bit past Ice and Snow World, and the building itself is this crazy futuristic curve design that looks like a frozen wave. you can get there by bus 119 from central street, takes about 30 minutes. tickets are like 50-80 yuan depending on the show, but even just walking around the outside and the riverside park is free and worth it

also the Siberian Tiger Park tip is solid but go early, like right when it opens at 8:30. the tigers are way more active in the morning before it gets hot, and the bus lines are shorter. i waited an hour once at noon and the tigers were just sleeping piles of orange fur

for the food tour, skip Laochangchun if it's busy, the wait can be ridiculous. try Xuefu Restaurant on 58 Central Street instead, their guobao rou is just as good and the line moves faster. and honestly the smoked sausage at Central Street stalls is fine but the real stuff is at Qiumei Sausage on 133 Zhongyang Street, been around since the 1900s

yeah the metro is solid but one thing - if you're landing in winter make sure you've got gloves and a hat in your carry-on, not your checked bag. the walk from the gate to baggage claim can be brutal if there's a delay on the jet bridge and you're stuck waiting outside for 10 minutes. happened to me last feb and i was freezing my ass off before i even got to the train.

The metro is the best option during operating hours, but don't forget to have a local payment app ready. You can't buy tickets with cash at the airport station, so set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you land.
