The east side of town near the river has a completely different vibe from the old wall area. There's a walking path along the water that connects a few small parks, and the neighborhood feels more open and less cramped. For food, check out the cluster of places around the intersection of Heping Road and Dongfeng Street, there's a Uyghur restaurant there that does amazing lamb pilaf and nan bread fresh from the tandoor. It's about a 15 minute walk from the main tourist spots but the trade off is quieter streets and fewer crowds.

honestly the area around the old city wall is prob your best bet for walkability and food. theres a bunch of small noodle shops and lamb skewer stalls along Renmin Road that are open late. avoid the new development zone near the train station, it's mostly chain restaurants and feels dead after 8pm. the hutong-style lanes just south of the wall have some great family-run places, just look for places with plastic stools outside and youll be fine

yeah the area around the South Gate market is solid too, it's like a 5 minute walk from the old wall but way less touristy. there's a spot called Lao Wang's Kitchen on Jiefang Street that does killer hand-pulled noodles for like 8 kuai, and the breakfast place next to the pharmacy has the best jianbing in town. the streets get pretty quiet after 10pm though so if you want late night stuff stick closer to Renmin Road
