Day trips from Chaoyang in a few months

I'm heading to Chaoyang in about 5 months and want to plan some day trips. Any suggestions for places to see around there? I'm heading to Chaoyang in about 5 months and want to plan some day trips. Any suggestions for places to see around there?

If you're willing to drive about an hour east, the Phoenix Mountain area has some decent hiking trails and a few old temples that don't get too crowded. The mountain itself isn't huge but the views over the city are nice on a clear day. Another option is the Lingta Pagoda in the city center if you want something quick, it's free to walk around the grounds and there's a small park nearby. For a longer trip, head to Beipiao about 90 minutes north, the Fossil Museum there is surprisingly good for a smaller city.

honestly if you've got a full day, head west to the Yebaishou area, about an hour and a half drive. there's an old section of the Great Wall that's mostly unrestored, way less touristy than the popular spots. the walk along the ridge is pretty rugged but the silence out there is something else. bring your own snacks though, the little village nearby only has one shop and it's hit or miss on whats open.

The Daling River runs right through Chaoyang and there are some nice walking paths along the banks if you want a low-key afternoon. A bit further out, the Nantaishan ruins have some old Buddhist carvings that are pretty interesting and almost nobody goes there.
