Beijing Tech's Secret Societies?
the "secret societies" at buct are mostly just old student clubs that got dramatic names over time, like the chemistry olympiad crowd that's been meeting in the same room in the yi fu building since the 80s. there's also a wushu group that trains at 6am near the track and they're weirdly selective but it's just martial arts, not a cult. the real insider thing on campus is the underground bike repair network, those guys know everything about everyone, way more useful than any ritual. ur roommate will be disappointed tbh
ngl the actual "secret" at buct is the old tunnel system under the north campus, near the 1980s buildings. it's not a society, it's steam pipes and maintenance access, and every few years a freshman posts about finding a "hidden door" and it blows up on weibo. the only people who really know it are the maintenance crew and a couple of urban exploration kids who got chased out by security. if ur roommate wants a ritual, tell him the ritual is getting caught and having to write a self-criticism with the campus police.
tbh most of what ppl call secret societies there are just old lab groups that never disbanded. like the polymer crowd has this unofficial alumni thing that meets off campus, no rituals just a lot of baijiu. if you want the real weird stuff ask about the 1990s dorm ghost stories, thats where the actual folklore lives
best photo spots in beijing?
olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos
everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for
For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
