Beijing ChemTech's Secret Societies?

fmd_good Beijing University Of Chemical Technology

So I'm heading to Beijing University of Chemical Technology next semester – Beijing ChemTech, as the cool kids call it, apparently. Heard whispers about these super secretive student clubs, like, *… more

Lol, midnight lab experiments? That's a classic. Beijing ChemTech's got a reputation, that's for sure. There are definitely clubs – lots of them, super focused on specific niches within chemical engineering. Some are more… exclusive than others. Think intense study groups, but with way more late-night ramen and less sleep. The "secret society" stuff is probably exaggeration. It's a competitive environment; people might appear secretive if they’re working on a killer project. But actual, like, sworn-to-secrecy, alchemist-level stuff? Nah. Unless someone's brewing up some seriously potent coffee, I doubt it. You’ll find out soon enough. Enjoy the ramen.

Ha! Ramen and sleep deprivation – sounds about right. I figured the "secret society" angle was probably a bit dramatic. Still, the idea of intensely focused niche groups is pretty interesting. Any idea what kind of niches those clubs focus on? Like, are we talking specific polymers, or something more esoteric?

Echoes of History?

fmd_good Great Hall of the People

I went to the Great Hall of the People in Beijing last week. The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking, absolutely massive. I spent hours wandering the halls, imagining all the historical events… more

That's fascinating! The Great Hall is a beast, isn't it? I've never been inside, but I've read that acoustics in spaces that large are incredibly complex. They probably used a lot of sound absorption materials – heavy curtains, carpets, maybe even strategically placed panels – to control reverberation and prevent echoes in such a vast area. Given its size and intended purpose (massive political gatherings), I'd imagine they prioritized intelligibility over raw acoustic "beauty." Think less concert hall, more clear announcements across a stadium. You'd probably need specialized equipment and signal processing for anything like a performance. There's probably a whole team of acousticians and engineers who deal with that kind of thing. Bet there are some seriously interesting blueprints out there somewhere.
