that yuanpei society thing is real, i knew a guy who tried out for it once. said the interview was just them asking about random books and watching how you react under pressure. the restricted archives thing is true too, they've got old qing dynasty documents down there that never made it online. if you want to see them without joining anything, try sweet-talking a grad student in the history department.
the most notorious one was "the 12th floor society" from the 80s, supposedly met in the old yenching dormitory's top floor. nothing like ancient texts though, more like networking and debating policy. if u want hidden history, check out the weiming lake area at dusk, that's where the real campus legends hang out
imo the secret society thing is way overblown but there is a pretty exclusive student group called the "yuanpei society" that picks members based on academic merit and weird interviews. they meet in the south part of campus near the old yenching garden, not exactly a hidden library but they do have access to some restricted archives in the main library basement. if you're around on a friday night you might catch them walking to their meeting spot near the lake, they all wear these plain blue windbreakers so they look like maintenance staff lol
best photo spots in beijing?
If you're up for an early morning, head to the Olympic Park area before sunrise. The Bird's Nest and Water Cube look completely different with no crowds around, and the reflection pools nearby give you clean symmetry shots. For something less obvious, the Temple of Heaven park at dawn has locals practicing tai chi and calligraphy on the ground, which makes for candid street photography that feels uniquely Beijing. Just get there by 6am to catch the soft light and the morning activities.
The Summer Palace at sunset is hard to beat, especially from the long corridor looking west across Kunming Lake. You get the reflection of the pagoda on the water and the hills turning orange behind it. If you want something more gritty, the hutong rooftops around Nanluoguxiang offer a different perspective, just find a bar or a hostel with a roof terrace around dusk.
