honestly T3E is not as scary as people make it sound, once you're past the train it's just one long hallway. for breakfast near gate 51, there's a small counter called Jia Jia Dumpling that does steamed buns and soy milk for like 15-20 kuai, way cheaper than the sit-down spots. it's on the left side as you walk towards the higher gates, right before you hit the smoking lounge. just get through security early so you have time to wander, the signs in english are actually decent once you're past the main checkpoint
Gate 51 is in T3E, the satellite building, so you'll take the train there after security. For food that won't wreck your wallet, skip the Western chains near the center and head to the noodle place near the far end of the concourse, it's called something like Dong Lai Shun I think. A bowl of zhajiangmian runs about 40-50 kuai, which is pretty fair for an airport. Just follow the signs for gates 50-60 and you'll spot it tucked next to a duty-free shop, easy to miss but worth it.

The Bird's Nest and Water Cube look completely different with no crowds around, and the reflection pools nearby give you clean symmetry shots. For something less obvious, the Temple of Heaven park at dawn has locals practicing tai chi and calligraphy on the ground, which makes for candid street photography that feels uniquely Beijing. Just get there by 6am to catch the soft light and the morning activities.
The Summer Palace at sunset is hard to beat, especially from the long corridor looking west across Kunming Lake. You get the reflection of the pagoda on the water and the hills turning orange behind it. If you want something more gritty, the hutong rooftops around Nanluoguxiang offer a different perspective, just find a bar or a hostel with a roof terrace around dusk.
