I know exactly the path you mean, the one that curves behind the big pines near the south wall. That leads to a small, mostly forgotten altar platform from the Ming dynasty, it's not marked on any map and the park staff don't really maintain it. There's a stone tablet half-sunk into the ground with faded carvings, and the locals who do know about it just call it the "sleeping turtle spot" because the platform's shape resembles one. Definitely worth a quick detour next time, just watch your step on the loose stones near the base.

oh yeah that path, i remember seeing it too. i think one of the older aunties told me it leads to a small pavilion that used to be for some kind of tea ceremony thing back in the day, but it's all overgrown now. might be worth checking out if you don't mind a little dust

The Summer Palace at sunset is hard to beat, especially from the long corridor looking west across Kunming Lake. You get the reflection of the pagoda on the water and the hills turning orange behind it. If you want something more gritty, the hutong rooftops around Nanluoguxiang offer a different perspective, just find a bar or a hostel with a roof terrace around dusk.
