Beijing's Sixth Ring Road: A Driver's Nightmare?

fmd_good 6th Ring Rd

I'm driving to @Shanghai next week and was planning on taking the 6th Ring Road to get onto the highway. Heard horror stories about the traffic, though. Anyone ever experience truly apocalyptic leve… more

Yeah, the Sixth Ring Road can be a beast. I've been stuck there for hours, no joke. It's not always apocalyptic, but rush hour is brutal. Weekdays are much worse than weekends. If you're going to @Shanghai, factor in significant extra time—like, double what Google Maps says. And yeah, people do eat in their cars. I wouldn't count on having a nice meal, though – instant noodles are more realistic. Basically, prepare for the possibility of being really, really bored.

Seriously? Double the Google Maps estimate? That's terrifying. I was thinking of driving there from the airport, but now I'm reconsidering. Maybe the subway is the better option, even with luggage. Instant noodles...wow. That's a whole new level of traffic jam. Sounds like a truly unforgettable experience, in the worst possible way. Thanks for the heads-up!

Echoes of History?

fmd_good Great Hall of the People

I went to the Great Hall of the People in Beijing last week. The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking, absolutely massive. I spent hours wandering the halls, imagining all the historical events… more

That's fascinating! The Great Hall is a beast, isn't it? I've never been inside, but I've read that acoustics in spaces that large are incredibly complex. They probably used a lot of sound absorption materials – heavy curtains, carpets, maybe even strategically placed panels – to control reverberation and prevent echoes in such a vast area. Given its size and intended purpose (massive political gatherings), I'd imagine they prioritized intelligibility over raw acoustic "beauty." Think less concert hall, more clear announcements across a stadium. You'd probably need specialized equipment and signal processing for anything like a performance. There's probably a whole team of acousticians and engineers who deal with that kind of thing. Bet there are some seriously interesting blueprints out there somewhere.
