I spent, like, five hours there, got completely turned around, and somehow ended up buying three pairs of socks I didn't need. Seriously, the place is a labyrinth! Is there some kind of secret map or a less chaotic way to navigate it, because my sense of direction is shot after that experience. I swear I saw the same fountain twice. Twice!!

the fountain thing is real, there's two of them that look almost identical - one near the east entrance and one by the food court on the 3rd floor. easiest way to keep your bearings is to use the escalator banks, theres only four main ones and they each have a different colored metal trim. north side is red, south is blue. once you know that you can pretty much triangulate where you are. also the uniqlo on the 2nd floor is a good landmark cause its huge and faces the central atrium

You're not crazy about the fountain, there are actually three of them and they all look like variations of the same design. The trick is to orient yourself by the floor numbers painted on the structural pillars, they're in white on a dark gray background and easy to miss if you're looking at storefronts. If you stick to the outer ring corridor on each floor, you'll eventually loop back to where you started without hitting any dead ends. The inner sections are where the maze really kicks in, so unless you need something specific in there, stay on the perimeter.

Honestly just follow the floor numbers on the ceiling tiles, theyre color coded too. Once u learn that it clicks, but yeah the fountain thing is a known trap lol

olympic forest park is slept on fr. the linden trees along the main axis go gold in late october and the bird's nest reflection in the lake at sunrise is nuts, barely anyone there on weekdays. also check out 798 art district on a weekday morning, the old factory pipes and graffiti make great contrast shots. tbh bring a wider lens than u think you need, everything in beijing is bigger than it looks in photos

everyone goes for the big landmarks but honestly the best shots i got were from the overpasses on the 3rd ring road at dusk, just traffic light trails with CCTV tower lit up in the background. also guomao at blue hour from the silk street footbridge, the CBD towers all glassy & orange, tripod helps cuz u need a slow shutter. one thing nobody mentions, air quality totally changes your photos so check the AQI app the night before, a clear day after rain is worth waiting for

For sunrise the Temple of Heaven east gate area is underrated, locals doing tai chi around 5:30am with the morning fog, way better than fighting crowds at Tiananmen. For sunset honestly just walk along the canal near Shichahai, the reflections off the water with the Drum Tower behind are hard to beat. Bring a tripod if you can, the good light only lasts like 20 mins this time of year.
