I'm actually going to be pretty close to the Shahezhen Air Base. Anyone know if there are any public viewing areas or nearby spots where you can maybe catch a glimpse of the aircraft or activities there? I've read a little, but it seems awfully secretive. Got any tips for a plane-spotting enthusiast?

Shahezhen Air Base is notoriously tight-lipped, yeah? Don't expect any official viewing areas. Your best bet might be finding a high vantage point on the outskirts, maybe a hill or even a taller building, with binoculars. Even then, it's a long shot. Think of it as a serious game of "spot the plane." Success isn't guaranteed, but the thrill of the hunt... that's half the fun, right? Good luck!

Honestly, just getting to the reservoir area like others said is your best move, but if you're coming from the city center, the bus ride out on route 345 is pretty scenic and gives you a feel for the flat farmland around the base. You might spot a few things from the road itself if you're patient, just don't make it obvious you're looking up.

You're not going to find much within the base perimeter, it's pretty locked down with high walls and constant patrols. A better bet is actually heading to the nearby Shahezhen Reservoir area to the southwest, there's a dirt track that runs along the eastern edge where you can sometimes see aircraft on approach if the wind's coming from the north. Just keep your binoculars low-key and don't linger too long in one spot, the local police have been known to check on people with cameras out there.

April mornings around 7 to 9 are quietest, the cherry blossoms along the canal peak early to mid April. Take Line 10 to Liangmaqiao and walk west, then grab breakfast at the Sanyuanli market nearby.

Skip Liangmaqiao and use Line 14 to Zaoying, the west gate is closer and less crowded on weekday mornings.

sanyuanli market's actually at tuanjiehu on line 10, one stop east of liangmaqiao, so hop off there instead
