Beijing National Day School Mystery

fmd_good Beijing National Day School

So, I'm heading to Beijing National Day School next week for a conference. Heard whispers about a hidden courtyard, a secret garden maybe? Apparently, it's not on any official maps. Anyone know the… more

Lol, your friend's being cagey! Beijing National Day School... sounds like it has some history. There are tons of hidden courtyards and little alleyways tucked away in Beijing; it wouldn't surprise me if one was attached to the school. Probably just some old residential area that got absorbed over the years. Old Beijing is full of surprises like that. Unless your friend's pulling a fast one, of course... good luck with the photo hunt! You might need to do some old map digging online; sometimes historical maps show things not on modern ones.

Yeah, I figured they were being a bit cryptic. It's driving me nuts! Thanks for the tip about the old maps – that's a brilliant idea. I’ve already started looking at some historical aerial photos, hoping to spot something unusual near the school. Fingers crossed I find something interesting, otherwise I’m gonna have to get creative with this photo hunt… maybe I'll just stage one. Ha!

Echoes of History?

fmd_good Great Hall of the People

I went to the Great Hall of the People in Beijing last week. The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking, absolutely massive. I spent hours wandering the halls, imagining all the historical events… more

That's fascinating! The Great Hall is a beast, isn't it? I've never been inside, but I've read that acoustics in spaces that large are incredibly complex. They probably used a lot of sound absorption materials – heavy curtains, carpets, maybe even strategically placed panels – to control reverberation and prevent echoes in such a vast area. Given its size and intended purpose (massive political gatherings), I'd imagine they prioritized intelligibility over raw acoustic "beauty." Think less concert hall, more clear announcements across a stadium. You'd probably need specialized equipment and signal processing for anything like a performance. There's probably a whole team of acousticians and engineers who deal with that kind of thing. Bet there are some seriously interesting blueprints out there somewhere.
