That's incredibly helpful, thank you! I hadn't thought about university archives; I was mostly focusing on online resources, which obviously haven't yielded much. The "detective game" analogy is perfect – it feels exactly like that! I'll definitely start with the Beijing Municipal Archives and see what treasures I can unearth.
