Dong Tiejiangying's Mystery?

fmd_good Dong Tiejiangying

I went to Dong Tiejiangying last week, hoping to find that legendary street food stall everyone raves about online. Turns out, the place is a ghost town... literally. I wandered around for hours, s… more

Nah, you just got incredibly unlucky. Dongcheng district can be like that sometimes – some areas are bustling, others feel utterly deserted, especially later in the day or on weekdays. That purple sweet potato though… sounds…interesting. Maybe it was a portal to another dimension, but a dimension where the only food is weirdly-colored sweet potatoes. I've been to less-than-stellar areas of Beijing myself. Plenty of places look abandoned until you stumble upon the tiny little shop tucked away somewhere, or find out that a massive market suddenly appears from nowhere at sunset. Check online for local forums or blogs; they might have more up-to-date info than whatever you found initially. It's a massive city. You'd need better intel to find that elusive food stall.

Beijing ChemTech Food Scene?

Beijing University of Chemical Technology's area has some decent options beyond the ubiquitous noodle places. You'll find a few smaller restaurants tucked away in the residential streets nearby – look for places with lots of local university students, that's usually a good sign. Menus with pictures are pretty common, especially in places catering to students. Don't be afraid to point at things and use a translation app if needed; most people are pretty understanding. Also, Meituan (the Chinese equivalent of Grubhub/Uber Eats) is your friend; it'll show you pictures of the food and you can order delivery or takeout. Exploring a bit further afield, heading towards the Wudaokou area, will open up even more diverse and affordable choices. Good luck with the conference!
