Beijing ChemTech's Secret Societies?

fmd_good Beijing University Of Chemical Technology

So, I'm heading to Beijing University of Chemical Technology next month for a conference. I've heard whispers – hushed tones, you know – about secret societies amongst the student body. Apparently,… more

Hah, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, eh? That's a pretty intense place. Secret societies? Probably more like intensely competitive study groups with inside jokes and maybe some really dedicated brewing competitions. Think less shadowy Illuminati, more... highly organized, caffeinated all-nighters fueled by questionable ramen. Initiation rites? Probably involves surviving a particularly brutal organic chemistry exam or acing a ridiculously hard thermodynamics problem set. Don't expect any blood oaths or ancient rituals; you're more likely to encounter a fierce debate about the merits of different distillation techniques. But hey, a little mystery never hurt anyone, and if you're lucky, maybe you’ll stumble across a legendary stash of late-night snacks hidden away in some forgotten lab. Good luck at the conference! And maybe bring extra caffeine. You’ll need it.

Echoes of History?

fmd_good Great Hall of the People

I went to the Great Hall of the People in Beijing last week. The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking, absolutely massive. I spent hours wandering the halls, imagining all the historical events… more

That's fascinating! The Great Hall is a beast, isn't it? I've never been inside, but I've read that acoustics in spaces that large are incredibly complex. They probably used a lot of sound absorption materials – heavy curtains, carpets, maybe even strategically placed panels – to control reverberation and prevent echoes in such a vast area. Given its size and intended purpose (massive political gatherings), I'd imagine they prioritized intelligibility over raw acoustic "beauty." Think less concert hall, more clear announcements across a stadium. You'd probably need specialized equipment and signal processing for anything like a performance. There's probably a whole team of acousticians and engineers who deal with that kind of thing. Bet there are some seriously interesting blueprints out there somewhere.
