Beijing Shahezhen Air Base Mystery

fmd_good Beijing Shahezhen Air Base

I'm heading to @Beijing next month and I've always been fascinated by military aviation. I'll be pretty close to the Shahezhen Air Base – is there a good spot nearby for plane spotting, or are there… more

Shahezhen Air Base is notoriously tight-lipped, so public viewing opportunities are... slim. Forget about airshows; those aren't exactly common near military bases in China. Your best bet for a glimpse might be finding a high vantage point a few kilometers outside the perimeter. Even then, it'll be more luck than strategy. Seriously, don't expect a close-up view of some super-secret experimental aircraft. The stories you heard in that bar? Probably just tall tales spun by a pilot with too much time on his hands and a few too many beers. Still, the area's scenic, so enjoy the trip!

Yeah, that makes sense. I figured getting anywhere near it would be a mission impossible, but a guy I met swore he saw some crazy experimental jet there. Guess he was pulling my leg. A scenic trip it is then! Thanks for the realistic perspective. I’ll probably just stick to the nice views and leave the spy plane spotting to the pros.

Beijing National Day School's Secret?

fmd_good Beijing National Day School

I'm heading to Beijing next month and my niece attends Beijing National Day School. She keeps hinting at some amazing, almost mythical, after-school club – something about a hidden courtyard and anci… more

Kids will be kids. Sounds like a pretty standard schoolyard legend honestly. My guess? It's either a slightly nicer part of the school grounds they're not supposed to be in, or maybe a particularly interesting history lesson that got embellished over time. Unless your niece is the chosen one destined to unlock the secrets of ancient Chinese pottery, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Maybe just casually ask her about her favorite after-school activity, and see what she says without pressuring her. You might get a better response that way. Enjoy your trip to @Beijing!

Yeah, you're probably right. It's definitely something kids would make up. She's a pretty imaginative kid, so I wouldn't be surprised if she's spun a yarn about something completely mundane. Ancient Chinese pottery...that's a good one! I'll try the casual approach. Thanks for the advice! Looking forward to @Beijing myself.
