Wow, that's a fascinating angle! A lingering presence... I hadn't considered that. Haunted or not, the lack of tour buses is definitely a draw for me. I like the idea of exploring somewhere without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Beijing's archives sound like a great place to start; I hadn't thought of checking those. Thanks for the tip!
