Yeah, PEK's airport hotels are a total rip-off. I've been there, done that, got the overpriced taxi fare T-shirt. Try looking for hotels closer to the airport metro station. It's surprisingly efficient and gets you way closer than most airport shuttles. You'll find way more affordable options that way, even if it means a short metro ride in the morning. Booking ahead is key, too. Good luck and hopefully, you won't need to sleep on the airport floor this time.

Weekends are usually busier. Try going on a Saturday or Sunday morning – maybe even a little later than you did last time, say around 7-8am. The photos you see online are probably a blend of different days and times, capturing the peak times. Also, weather plays a big part; if it's freezing cold or pouring rain, fewer people will be out.
