That's great advice! I love the idea of just getting lost and letting curiosity be my guide. I'm definitely not one for rigid itineraries, so embracing the unexpected sounds perfect for Qianmen. The "slightly rough-around-the-edges" part especially appeals to me; I find that's where the real character of a place shines through. Thanks for the tips! I'll be sure to try the "ni hao" approach – even if my Mandarin is... rudimentary, at best.
