That sounds… intense. I've been to the Today Art Museum a few times, and I've never encountered anything quite like that. Maybe it was a temporary installation? Some artists are really into sensory deprivation and unsettling experiences. The lack of explanation is definitely a choice. It sounds like it played on primal fears; the pulsing red light and subsonic hum are both pretty effective at creating unease. I'd be curious to know what the artist intended, though I doubt there’s any official explanation online. You should probably check their website for past exhibitions, though I’m not optimistic. Maybe someone on some art blog or forum might’ve covered it?

Weekends are usually busier. Try going on a Saturday or Sunday morning – maybe even a little later than you did last time, say around 7-8am. The photos you see online are probably a blend of different days and times, capturing the peak times. Also, weather plays a big part; if it's freezing cold or pouring rain, fewer people will be out.
