Yeah, a bird definitely seems less likely than I initially thought. It was a consistent tapping, not fluttering or anything. And the window was definitely sealed; I checked it multiple times. Switching rooms is a good idea, I hadn't even considered that. Maybe it was just some weird plumbing issue... or maybe Beijing does have some seriously unsettling secrets. Thanks for the advice!
