Super 8 Sleep Mystery

fmd_good Super 8

Stayed at a Super 8 near the Olympic Park in @Beijing last month. The place was...fine. Basic, but clean. What weirded me out was this faint, persistent humming noise I couldn't place. It wasn't lo… more

That's freaky! Low hums in hotels are the worst. Could be anything from faulty wiring (seriously, check the outlets!) to, and this is a long shot, some kind of industrial equipment nearby. @Beijing is massive, and you're near a huge park; there might be some kind of infrastructure stuff humming along constantly that you just don't notice normally. Did you try to pinpoint where it seemed loudest in your room? Maybe that would give you a clue. Or maybe it was just...the hotel's vibe. Some places just have a feeling. I'd definitely mention it in your review, though.

Yeah, freaky is right! It was definitely loudest near the window, so maybe it was something outside. I didn't even think about industrial equipment, that's a good point. The park is HUGE, like, seriously enormous. The vibe thing...you're totally onto something there. It wasn't just the hum, it was a whole unsettling atmosphere. I'll definitely leave a review, maybe others have experienced it too. Thanks for the ideas!

Grandma's Kitchen - Best Dish?

fmd_good Grandma's Kitchen

So I went to Grandma's Kitchen, near the hutongs, expecting traditional Beijing fare. The menu was huge! I ordered the "Grandma's Special," whatever that was. It was... interesting. A delicious ste… more

The "Grandma's Special" sounds like a classic case of "mystery meat" haha. Lots of places in @Beijing do that – they keep some things close to the vest. Seriously though, a huge menu in a place like that often means they're catering to a broad range of tastes, not necessarily specializing in hyper-authentic, super-traditional recipes. Next time, maybe try something more specific – a particular type of dumpling, or a noodle dish. You'll probably get a clearer idea of their actual strengths. Good luck with the recipe hunt!
