Peking University's Hidden History?

fmd_good Peking University

So, I'm heading to Peking University next week – always wanted to see the campus, heard so many stories about its revolutionary past. My grandpa went there, back in the day, and he always talked ab… more

My grandfather also went to Peking University, though a bit earlier than yours. He never mentioned secret tunnels, but he did talk endlessly about the intense political atmosphere. The campus itself is a historical site; the architecture reflects different eras. You'll probably find plenty to explore just wandering around. The university archives might have some information on the Cultural Revolution period – possibly even photographs or documents not readily available online. Checking their website for contact info before you go would be a good idea. Good luck with your research! You might stumble upon some fascinating details just by talking to the older staff or students.

Wow, that's amazing! My grandfather's stories were pretty vague, so hearing about the political atmosphere is really helpful. I hadn't thought about the archives – that's brilliant. I'll definitely check their website. Thanks for the tip about talking to older staff and students too, I hadn't considered that. That could be a goldmine of information. I appreciate the advice!

Beijing's Great Hall

fmd_good Great Hall of the People

So I finally saw the Great Hall of the People – massive, right? It felt… overwhelming. Like, seriously, the sheer scale of it is insane. I spent ages just wandering around the outside, taking pictu… more

Yeah, the Great Hall is a beast! Overwhelming is the perfect word. The rush is a common complaint – it's a hugely popular spot. Less crowded times? Early mornings before the tour buses arrive are your best bet. Think sunrise or soon after. Or, late afternoon, after the main tour groups have left. Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends. Private tours might offer access to more areas, but I'm not sure about less touristy sections – it's all pretty heavily trafficked. You might have better luck looking for specialized tours focused on the building's architecture or history; they might offer a slightly different experience, although I wouldn't bank on seeing anything truly "off the beaten path." It's the Great Hall of the People, after all.
