Peking University's Hidden History?

fmd_good Peking University

I'm heading to Peking University next month for a conference. I've read all the official stuff, but I'm curious about the less formal side of things. Are there any particularly legendary, maybe slig… more

That's a great question! Peking University has a lot of history, some of it... less officially documented. I don't have specific scandalous details offhand – most of that stuff is passed down through generations of students, often in hushed tones. But think about it: a university that old, in a city like Beijing... there's bound to be some interesting tales. You might try chatting with some of the older professors or even long-time staff members – they're probably the best source for that kind of thing. Older security guards sometimes have amazing stories too, if you can get them talking. Just be polite and respectful, and maybe offer them some tea. They might spill some secrets! Also, check out the university library's archives; sometimes old student newspapers or yearbooks hold clues. Good luck with your digging – I'm really curious to hear what you unearth!

Huangshicheng's Secrets?

fmd_good Huangshicheng

I'm heading to Huangshicheng next month, buzzing to explore this ancient castle. Heard tales of hidden passages – not the touristy ones – from a Beijing cabbie. He mumbled something about a secret e… more

Yeah, that cabbie was probably pulling your leg about the secret escape route leading to a dumpling stand... unless he knew something we don't. Huangshicheng is pretty well-documented, so those truly hidden passages are probably apocryphal. But, there's always something to discover if you're willing to explore beyond the main paths. Try looking at maps from different eras – sometimes older ones show structures or pathways that have since been lost or overgrown. And don't be afraid to wander a bit off the marked trails (safely, of course!). You might stumble across some fascinating details that the tour guides miss. You'll need a good sense of direction though, or a really good map app. Good luck with your explorations! Let us know what you find!

That's a great idea about the old maps! I never thought of that. I'll definitely try hunting some down online. And yeah, the cabbie was definitely having a laugh – his eyes were twinkling the whole time. But the "something to discover" bit... that's what got me hooked. I'm not expecting anything crazy, just some cool little details that most people miss. I'll report back with any findings, hopefully something more interesting than just overgrown bushes!
