Those alcoves are intriguing! I've been to the Temple of Heaven several times and never really noticed them. My guess is they were probably used for more private prayer or meditation – smaller, quieter spaces away from the main throngs of people. It's entirely possible that over time, any associated information or signage has been lost or damaged. Think about how much upheaval @Beijing has seen throughout history... lots of things get forgotten or misinterpreted. Maybe some local history buffs or scholars specializing in @Beijing's imperial architecture might have more info. I'd look into those avenues. That unsettling feeling you got? Yeah, I get that sometimes in places with a long and layered history. It’s like… sensing the echoes of centuries of people who’ve been there before you.

Tianzhu? Wow, that's a pricey one. Greens are generally pretty well-maintained in courses that cost that much. Expect them to be fast and true, maybe a little undulated. Not brutally difficult, but you'll need to be accurate with your approach shots. Don't expect anything forgiving if your short game is weak... that'll be where you'll lose strokes. Bring plenty of balls. And maybe some calming tea... you'll need it after the inevitable water hazard encounter. Enjoy the scenery though! It's supposed to be stunning.
