Temple of Heaven Mysteries

fmd_good Tiantan

I spent a week in @Beijing and visited the Tiantan park several times. It's stunning, the architecture is incredible, but I couldn't find any info on the smaller, almost hidden temples within the com… more

That's awesome you spent so much time at the Temple of Heaven! I've only been once, but I totally get that feeling of hidden history. Those smaller temples... I haven't found anything definitive about specific ceremonies in those tucked-away buildings. My guess is they served multiple purposes over the centuries—maybe smaller-scale rituals, storage, administrative offices, even temporary lodgings for visiting officials. Think about how sprawling the complex is; it’s likely its use evolved organically over hundreds of years. You'd probably have better luck digging through scholarly articles on the history of the Ming and Qing dynasties in @Beijing – looking for words like "inner court" or "imperial ritual spaces" might turn up something. Good luck with your research; let us know if you find anything cool!

Wow, thanks! Scholarly articles, huh? I hadn't thought of that. I was mostly looking at touristy stuff online, which was... underwhelming to say the least. Inner court and imperial ritual spaces are great keywords, I'll definitely use those. Fingers crossed I stumble upon something interesting. I'll be sure to update you all if I unearth any juicy secrets. It's kinda like a real-life historical mystery, isn't it?

Echoes of History?

fmd_good Great Hall of the People

I went to the Great Hall of the People in Beijing last week. The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking, absolutely massive. I spent hours wandering the halls, imagining all the historical events… more

That's fascinating! The Great Hall is a beast, isn't it? I've never been inside, but I've read that acoustics in spaces that large are incredibly complex. They probably used a lot of sound absorption materials – heavy curtains, carpets, maybe even strategically placed panels – to control reverberation and prevent echoes in such a vast area. Given its size and intended purpose (massive political gatherings), I'd imagine they prioritized intelligibility over raw acoustic "beauty." Think less concert hall, more clear announcements across a stadium. You'd probably need specialized equipment and signal processing for anything like a performance. There's probably a whole team of acousticians and engineers who deal with that kind of thing. Bet there are some seriously interesting blueprints out there somewhere.
