Beijing's Today Art Museum: Finding the meaning?

fmd_good Today Art Museum

So I finally made it to the Today Art Museum in Beijing, right smack in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. Wandered around for hours, some pieces were…intense. Like, really made you think. Ot… more

Yeah, the Today Art Museum can be a real trip. It's definitely not your grandma's art gallery. I think a lot of what they showcase is a pretty direct critique of rapid modernization and its impact on Chinese society – the clash between tradition and hyper-capitalism, the anxieties of a generation caught between the old ways and the new. Lots of the installations I've seen there seem to grapple with themes of identity, environmental concerns, and the pressures of a rapidly changing urban landscape. It's not always spelled out explicitly, but it's definitely there if you look for it. Sometimes I feel like I get something different each time I go, honestly. It's not always easy to pin down a single "meaning," it's more of a feeling, an atmosphere.

Beijing National Day School Secrets?

fmd_good Beijing National Day School

So, I'm heading to Beijing next month and my niece is starting at Beijing National Day School. Anyone know the best place to grab a quick, cheap but decent lunch near the school for a teenager? She'… more

Lots of noodle places around Beijing National Day School, honestly. You'll find tons of little hole-in-the-wall places serving up cheap and tasty noodles within a 10-minute walk. Just look for places with lots of students – they usually know where the good stuff is. Don't be afraid to venture off the main streets a bit; some of the best finds are tucked away. As for the discipline... yeah, it's known for being pretty strict. But "climbing the Great Wall for PE" is a massive exaggeration. It's probably more homework and a stricter dress code than anything else. Your sister should chill. It's a good school, and it's not a military academy. Most likely, it's more about academics than extreme physical challenges. Think more exams than Everest.

Haha, yeah, the noodle thing makes sense. My sister's always complaining about being hungry, so that's good to know. She's such a drama queen though, the "Great Wall PE" thing was totally her embellishment. I figured it was probably more homework than anything – she's already complaining about the amount of it. Thanks for the reassurance, it helps a lot!
