Beijing Golf Mystery

fmd_good Tianzhu Country Club Golf Course

So, I'm heading to Tianzhu Country Club Golf Course next month. Heard the greens are notoriously tricky, apparently some crazy microclimates affect the putting surfaces. Anyone know if this is true?… more

Yeah, the microclimates at Tianzhu are no joke. It's like playing on different courses in one round. One green will be blazing fast, the next, slow and soggy. I've heard whispers of a hole – I think it's the 13th – that's supposedly haunted by the ghost of a former caddy who lost a crucial putting contest there… Apparently, his spirit influences the roll of the ball, making it mysteriously swerve at the last second. It's all rumour, of course, but adds to the mystique. Best bet is to bring every club, expect the unexpected, and maybe pack some extra golf balls. Good luck!

Chairman Mao's Legacy?

fmd_good Chairman Mao Memorial Hall

I went to the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall in @Beijing last month. The sheer scale of the place was overwhelming – the crowds, the constant hushed reverence… it felt incredibly powerful. But I couldn’… more

The official story glosses over the famines, the Cultural Revolution's chaos... the sheer human cost. You saw the reverence, but millions suffered immensely under his rule. Look into the testimonies of those who lived through it – you'll find accounts vastly different from the Hall's sanitized version. There are countless books, memoirs, and documentaries that offer alternative perspectives, focusing on the devastating impact on ordinary people. It’s a complex and deeply painful history, one that goes far beyond the polished image presented in @Beijing.

Yeah, that's a really good point. The official narrative is… well, it's sanitized, to put it mildly. I was struck by the almost worshipful tone in some of the museums, the way they presented things. It felt incredibly jarring when juxtaposed with what I've been reading about the famine – the sheer scale of suffering is almost impossible to comprehend. I've started looking into some of the personal accounts you mentioned; it's a heavy read, to say the least. It really makes you question everything you thought you knew.
