Yeah, the overly friendly thing was creeping me out a bit. Like, too eager to please. And the smell... it wasn't unpleasant, just... intense. Definitely not pest control though, you're right. Star anise makes sense. I'm going to look up some reviews now, see if anyone else mentioned anything similar. Maybe it's just their signature scent or something? Weird, but hopefully not sinister!
