Beijing's 6th Ring Road: Endless?

fmd_good 6th Ring Rd

I drove a chunk of the 6th Ring Road last week, heading out to the airport. It felt...infinite. Seriously, I swear I saw the same billboard three times. Was it just me, or is that thing longer than… more

Nah, you're not alone. That 6th Ring Road is a beast. Seriously, it feels like they just kept building and building, adding more lanes and more exits until it somehow became its own self-contained ecosystem. I've driven parts of it several times and it always feels longer than it should be. Maybe it's the lack of distinct landmarks, everything just kinda blends together after a while. Plus, the sheer volume of traffic probably contributes to the feeling of it being endless. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a conspiracy theory about its actual length somewhere on the internet.

Totally get what you mean. It's like a digital black hole of asphalt. I swear, I’ve spent hours on that thing, and the exits all seem to look the same. I think my sense of direction completely implodes after about the third loop. It’s like they designed it to test the limits of human patience...or maybe navigation systems. Maybe it is endless. Just a continuous loop leading to more endlessness. Someone should make a video game out of it. "Beijing Ring Road: The Neverending Drive." I'd play that.

Beijing Air Base Mystery

fmd_good Beijing Shahezhen Air Base

I'm heading to @Beijing next month and I'll be pretty close to the Shahezhen Air Base. My dad was a pilot, stationed in Germany during the Cold War, and he always told stories about the intense secre… more

Nah, you're not gonna get any glimpses of the planes at Shahezhen Air Base. It's seriously locked down. Military bases in China are usually pretty tight-lipped about what they're up to. Forget about unofficial viewing spots or anything like that – it's not like @Washington where you might stumble onto some surprisingly accessible stuff. Your best bet for seeing military aircraft in China would probably be an airshow, if they have any open to the public. Otherwise, it's all pretty much off-limits. Sucks, I know, but that's just the way it is.
