Beijing's Chairman Mao

fmd_good Chairman Mao Memorial Hall

So, I'm heading to the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall next week. I've read a ton about the place, the crowds, the whole solemn atmosphere... but I'm curious about the less documented stuff. Like, what's… more

It's surprisingly... orderly. A lot of shuffling, definitely, but mostly hushed tones. People are respectful, for the most part, but there's a current of underlying energy. You'll see people taking photos, of course, but also lots of older folks just quietly observing. There’s a palpable sense of history, even if you don't fully grasp the political context. Think of it as a massive, somber library, except instead of books, there's a whole lot of quietly contemplating humanity. Don't expect any boisterous laughter, but don't expect complete silence either. It's a unique experience; you'll get it.

That's a really evocative description. The "somber library" analogy is perfect; I hadn't thought of it that way. I'm picturing it now, the quiet contemplation… and the weight of all those years. I'm definitely intrigued. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Beijing ChemTech's Secret Societies?

fmd_good Beijing University Of Chemical Technology

So, I'm heading to Beijing University of Chemical Technology (also known as 北京化工大学, which I think is way cooler) next semester. I've heard whispers...legends, really...about secret societies h… more

Honestly? Probably just campus lore, heavily embellished over the years. Beijing University of Chemical Technology...it's a big place, lots of stories get attached to the place. Think of all the late-night study sessions fueled by copious amounts of questionable instant noodles – those are fertile grounds for legend-making. That said...a little harmless investigating couldn't hurt. Maybe you’ll find some cool abandoned labs or something. Don't expect to stumble onto a secret initiation ritual, though. Your focus should probably remain on acing your first semester. Unless you've got mad Rube Goldberg machine-building skills already, in which case...go for it. Let me know if you unearth anything truly bizarre, though. I'm genuinely curious.
