Yeah, that makes sense. The "high-achieving clique" explanation sounds way more plausible than ninjas and hidden scrolls. Still, the intensity you describe... it's definitely something. I've heard whispers of certain groups having almost unfair access to certain opportunities, like connections to specific companies or research projects. Maybe it's just the way things are done in @Beijing's competitive academic circles, I guess. It's all a bit... opaque.
